Standard 6
Communication. Candidates use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Supporting Explanation
Candidates understand language development, the role of language in learning and how cultural and gender differences affect communication in the classroom. They recognize effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and use them to support student learning. Candidates model effective communication strategies in conveying ideas and information, asking questions, listening, giving directions, probing for student understanding, and helping students express their ideas. Using a variety of tools, including technology, candidates support and expand student expression in speaking, writing and technical media.
What? (Evidence)
So What? (Reflection)
Important forms of communication in the classroom include teacher-student communication, teacher-parent communication, teacher-teacher communication, and student-student communication. I understand that there are differences in language development among the students in my classroom. Communication in the classroom is important whether it is verbal or non-verbal. I will have to model and scaffold effective communication in the classroom. Students need to be exposed to cooperative learning models in the classroom in order to practive effective communication. I also understand that teachers need to constantly communicate with parents and keep them informed. Teachers also have to effectively communicate with their co-workers and administration because teachers can accomplish more through collaboration and cooperation. I also understand that teachers need to help students communicate together. My DRL, culture lesson plan, and literature circles each show a cooperative learning strategy to help students convey ideas, ask questions, and listen. Many of my cooperative learning strategies contain a peer evaluation form so that each student can rate themselves and their group members of selected skills including listening, respecting others opinions, participation, etc.
Now What? (Direction)
I plan to continue to model and scaffold effective communication with the students in my classroom. I also plan to put in place communication channels between parents and co-workers. I feel as though this will allow a open communication which can better help me meet the needs of my students better. I will also continue to use cooperative learning strategies to build my students' social skills.
