Anticipatory Set/Focus
Who remembers who built the first communities in America? (ABK) Does anyone know who came to America after the Indians? Did you know that the first explorers to America came to the states that are right around us? (RRL) To get us thinking about the early explorers I am going to give you a worksheet. For this worksheet, I want you to sort the words in the word bank by the date given.(IAL) It is ok if you are not sure right now because today we are going to be learning about the first settlers in America. We are going to this by doing a reading road map.
Essential Question: What are some of the early settlements in America?
Instruction
[Show students a map of the world and point out where the early explorers came from and which direction they went. Hand out the reading road map worksheet.] Normally, when we read we start at the right side and go left, but in order to complete this worksheet we have to start on the left side and go right. Does anyone know why we are starting over there? [Compare the worksheet to a map and make sure children understand geological connection] Notice that on the worksheet that I gave you the ships are going in the same direction as the explorers went when they came to America. Today, we are going to take that trip with them while we read lesson 2 from our book. Can everyone put their finger on where the settlers started from? Right, that is also where we are going to start. Now, put your finger on where they stopped. At the top of the page, you will see what page you need to be reading. Below that you have what you will be doing and what question you will be answering. I want you to answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper.
Closure
[Give the students another sort paper and have them redo their sort.] Did the reading road map make it easier to sort the words the second time?
Assessment:
Take up reading road map, sorts, and independent practice journal entry.
Independent Practice
Students will a journal entry from a settler new to America’s point of view. The journal will state which settlement they arrived at and use information from the book to support their writing. The entry length is two five to seven sentence paragraphs.
Take up the next day for assessment.
Accommodations/Differentiated Learning Experiences
Have students who finish early select a book relating to the topics covered from the shelf.
Walk around while students are working on their reading road map and help any students that may need help with it.
